Lumen Fidelis' Safe Haven
Lumen Fidelis, Latin for "light of the faithful," is a nonprofit organization committed to creating safe, sober living environments for individuals seeking recovery and stability. Since September 2023, we have been operating the Safe Haven program at the former Value Motel in Hazel Dell, Washington. Our mission is to offer a supportive community where individuals can rebuild their lives and work toward a brighter future.
Transforming People that Change the Community for the Better
The Value Motel, once a notorious hotspot for crime and drug activity, has undergone a remarkable transformation. With the efforts of Lumen Fidelis, it is now a beacon of hope for those in need of recovery housing. The property, located at 708 N.E. 78th St., Vancouver, WA, has become a safe haven for veterans, domestic violence survivors, older adults, families, and individuals with criminal histories.
Since taking over the lease, Lumen Fidelis has served hundreds of residents, providing them with a stable environment to recover and thrive. Our program is built on a "right to remedy" model, offering residents the opportunity to stay as long as they remain clean, sober, and committed to improving their lives. Weekly meetings, sobriety checks, and partnerships with local service providers ensure that residents receive the support they need.
Our Partners
We partner with organizations across the region to offer an affordable and sober living environment. With more than a dozen organizations offering services on site Safe Haven has become a small hub for support. Our on site staff work closely with VAX personnel also on site to provide specialized support to our residents.
Our Impact
- Reduced Crime: Police activity at the motel has significantly decreased, with only 28 criminal reports filed between January 2022 and September 2025, compared to 303 reports in the previous decade.
- Community Partnerships: We collaborate with various service providers to offer comprehensive support to our residents.
- Life Transformation: Many residents have achieved remarkable milestones, including securing jobs, rebuilding family relationships, and even purchasing their own homes.
Our Action
At Lumen Fidelis, we are taking bold action to transform the lives of individuals like our friend Justin and countless others who have found themselves in desperate situations at a hotel that was never meant to be a home. Our mission, guided by compassion and commitment, propels us to create real change. Through a comprehensive hotel remodel, we envision a revitalized space where people find more than just shelter – they find a true haven. Our actions focus on empowering residents to regain their dignity, fostering a sense of community, and providing a foundation for a brighter future. By repurposing this hotel, we're not just giving people a place to stay; we're offering them a place to call home, to heal, and to reclaim their lives.
